Initially Peter was an NCO pilot. 30 March 1943 - Distinguished Flying Cross - Sergeant (later Pilot Officer) Peter Stuart Isaacson, DFM, RAAF, No 156 Squadron (RAF). One night in March 1943, Pilot Officer Isaacson was detailed for a mission to attack Berlin. Following the attack and while still over the target area, Pilot Officer Isaacson's aircraft was hit by anti-aircraft fire and severely damaged. The mid-upper turret frame was twisted, the perspex and two engine cowlings blown-off, the aileron controls damaged and the aircraft forced down to 4,000 feet AGL. On the return journey the aircraft was driven-off the route and held in a cone of searchlights for 15 minutes and during this time a further loss of height down to 900 feet AGL occurred. In the face of this perilous situation Pilot Officer Isaacson, showing coolness, resolution and skilful airmanship, succeeded in flying his aircraft back to base. This officer was an outstanding captain of aircraft who had a fine record of many successful operational sorties. Served WWII.

Both Peter Isaacson and Bob Neilson were commissioned on 28/01/43.

On 05/09/42 Peter was second pilot when their Lancaster was severely damaged by flak and fighter attack.

Of particular note is Peter's unauthorised flight under the Sydney Harbour Bridge in his Lancaster (A66-1) on the 22/10/43. A colour portrait of this momentous event can be seen above.
