During his RAAF service, Allen also served in Butterworth with 2 Squadron from June 1963 to January 1966 and was fortunate to be the only LAC to fly as a flight fitter on the DC3 VIP Flights to Vietnam, Laos, Thailand and Borneo.  In addition, while in Canada on the pick-up of A4-283, Allen was promoted to Sergeant (December, 1969).  On his arrival back at 38 Squadron, Allen was given the news that he was now the NCO I/C and remained so until he took discharge in 1977.

Allen adds that he spent most of his time with 38 Squadron, titlehough he did spend seven months with the UN (UNMOGIP) and a couple of short attachments to 35 Squadron at Richmond after the squadron's return from Vietnam.
