Other: John joined the the Air Force in 1978 and became a helicopter crewman in 1980.  He spent the next nine years flying in the back of various RAAF helicopter types, but when the helicopters were handed over to the Army in 1989, John trasnsferred to the C-130H Hercules as a loadmaster with 36 Squadron. He left the RAAF in 2000 but returned a year later and freely admits that rejoining was one of the better decisions in his life because it has led him onto the C17.  John was awarded an Order of Australia (AM) in 2009 for services to the RAAF and to 36 Squadron as Loadmaster Leader.
