Tony Ryan, Patron - RAAF Airman Aircrew Association ....
ony enlisted in the Royal Australian Air Force on 18/02/1958, and after completing recruit training (began at Richmond - finished at Rathmines), he was posted to the RAAF School of Technical Training (RSTT) at RAAF Base Wagga, graduating as an engine mechanic.
From Wagga, Tony was posted to No 2 Aircraft Depot (2AD) at RAAF Base Richmond (02/02/1959) and after about 18 months, he returned to RSTT to undergo a Engine Fitter Course. He graduated during 1960 and was posted to Basic Flying Training School (BFTS), RAAF Base Point Cook. From there to No 2 Air Trials Unit (ATU) RAAF Edinburgh 1963, to No 1 Aircraft Depot (1AD) RAAF Base Laverton 1966 where he was promoted to Corporal. In 1968, Tony was posted to 36 Squadron Engine Section at RAAF Base Richmond and he was promoted to Sergeant in 1969.
Flight Engineer
Tony completed No 10 C-130A flight engineer course in 1970. As a flight engineer, he gained considerable experience which progressed him to becoming a flight simulator instructor where he trained and checked flight engineers. He became a Check Flight Engineer and was promoted to Flight Sergeant.
In late 1977, Tony was attached 37 Squadron for C-130E flight engineer conversion course as a prelude to the acquisition of the C-130H. He returned to 36 Squadron in mid-1978 as the Flight Engineer Leader (Warrant Officer) for the introduction of the RAAF's new C-130H aircraft.
In January 1979, Tony was posted to 33 Flight (later 33 Squadron) and appointed inaugural Boeing 707 Flight Engineer Leader. Tony discharged from the RAAF on 25/03/1981.
Post−RAAF
Tony joined Cathay Pacific Airways and operated the Lockheed Tri-Star L1011 and the Boeing 747. He retired from Cathay on 02/01/1991. Tony continued his aviation interests in general aviation and gained a Private Pilot Licence (PPL) in 1991. He instructed ground subjects at Manning River Aero Club, (now grounded due medical). He is also a member of the Manning River Branch of the Air Force Association. Tony spent over 25 years on the Old Bar Airstrip Management Committee and 12 years with Wingham RSL Sub-Branch as the Membership/Secretary.
Interests
Local government activities, vintage car movement and family.
Domestic
Married Helen on 12/06/1961. Two Children, 10 Grandchildren and currently 16 Great Grandchildren with one more on the way. Tony will be married 65 years in June 2026 and will also turn 86 years in the same month.
