Frederick George Brown joined the Royal Australian Air Force as a storeshand on 23 April 1964 and discharged on 27 August 1989.   From 03 February 1990 to 14 January 1993, he served on the Active Reserve giving him a total of 31 years of service.   In 1976, Fred was awarded the Air Force Medal for air operations as a helicopter crewman during the 1974 Queensland floods.

In his early career, Fred remustered to Airfield Defence Guard and he saw service in Thailand (Ubon) in 1966 followed by Vietnam in 1967.   In 1970, Fred completed No 8 Helicopter Crewman Course, and subsequently, returned to Vietnam in July 1971 where he flew with 9 Squadron until returning to Australia in December 1971.

Fred continued flying with 9 Squadron at RAAF Amberley until June 1978, when he was posted to 37 Squadron, RAAF Richmond, to convert onto the C-130E Hercules as a loadmaster.   In August 1979, Fred returned to 9 Squadron and remained there until January 1984 when posted to 33 Squadron, RAAF Richmond, to convert onto the Boeing 707.   In January 1986, Fred returned to 9 Squadron until posted to 12 Squadron in December 1988.   Fred discharged from the permanent air force in August 1989.

Post-RAAF, Fred worked for Qantas (Brisbane) as an aircraft loader where he remained for 10 years.   In his retirement years, Fred enjoyed golf and travelling.
