Ian joined the RAAF in May 1949 and went on to complete No 5 Basic Signaller Course and Gunner qualifications in 1952. After reaching the rank of WOFF Signaller, Ian was commissioned as a FLGOFF into the GD Signaller catagory in 1958. Following the reduction in numbers in the GD Signaller category, he moved into the Equipment Branch in late 1962 as a FLTLT. He retired from the Air Force in 1975. During his flying career, Ian crewed on Dakota, Lincoln, Neptune and Auster aircraft types, as well as some time on the RAAF′s 'Crash Boats' at Neutral Bay, Sydney. Units served include:
