Vale - Gary Ainsleigh POWER, A222878, Loadmaster ....

Corporal Gary Ainsleigh Power, a 38 Squadron loadmaster, was killed on 28th of August, 1972, when RAAF Caribou A4-233 crashed into dense jungle of the Kudjeru Gap in Papua New Guinea.

The aircraft was attempting to fly through the gap and encountered rapidly deteriorating weather conditions, leading to a fatal crash due to controlled flight into terrain; the aircraft, which was flying from Lae to Port Moresby, was carrying military cadets and crew members.

Tragically, 25 lost their lives, most aged between 16 and 18. Pilots Flight Lieutenant Graham David Thomas (O222081), Pilot Officer Gregory Lionel Ebsary (O58698) were also killed in the crash along with Captain Robert Dawson Loftus (215573), a ground liaison officer with the Australian army.
