Vale - Brian WILSON 'Firey', A122206, Loadmaster ....

No 12 Crewman Course, September 1973.

Sergeant Brian Wilson was tragically killed along with two other crew members when Iroquois A2-1023 crashed into marshland on 19/08/81 one kilometre north of RAAF Williamtown, NSW, near what is now 45 Richardson Road, Medowie.  Tail rotor drive failure was found to be the cause of the crash.  One of the tail rotor pitch control cables fouled the tail rotor drive shaft which caused the failure of the tail rotor drive and ended when the main rotor blades separated.  The main rotor struck the cabin and broke away from the rotor shaft.

Crew: FLTLT Adrian Bryant (Pilot), SQNLDR Derek John Knights, O317786, (Co-Pilot) and SGT Brian Wilson (Loadmaster).  Adrian Bryant (as testament to his commitment to aviation) had a Tigermoth on the base and flew on weekends.  Sadly, Brian Wilson was an exchange crewman (loadmaster) from RAAF Amberley while the incumbent crewman was absent on leave.  FLTLT Adrian Bryant was the SAR Flight pilot and Sqnldr Derek Knights was assisting with the Flight.
